  • In 1519, Portuguese explorer, an employ of Spain, started a long journey to discover the western route to the spice island of Indonesia via the south America. South America is a continent where several countries like Chile, Argentina etc. are located. After navigating through Strait of Magellan, In November 1520, their fleet entered an unfamiliar ocean. He called this body of water Mar Pacifico, which in both Portuguese and Spanish means “Peaceful Sea”.
  • Pacific Ocean is also called “Father of Oceans”. It covers one-third (1/3rd ) of the surface Earth. By volume, the Pacific contains more than half of the world’s ocean waters. Due to plate tectonics, the Pacific is currently sinking.
  • The deepest point on this planet (Earth) is located in Pacific Ocean, “Mariana Trench” which sometimes called as “Challenger Deep”. This Deep has a depth of 7 miles or 11 km (10,900m). If the world’s largest mountain i.e. Mount Everest was placed in Mariana Trench then even its peak would still be over 2 km under the water. INTERESTING..!!
  • The area of Pacific Ocean is 155,557,000 sqkm and average depth is 4,280 m.
  • The world’s largest island is Greenland that is located in Atlantic Ocean who follows Pacific Ocean.  New Guinea is the largest island of the southern hemisphere that is entirely located in Pacific Ocean. Its area is 785,753 sqkm. The eastern half of the island is the major landmass of the independent state of Papua New Guinea whose capital is Port Moresby. The western half, known as western New Guinea or west Papua, forms a part of Indonesia and comprises the provinces of Papua and west Papua.
  • In the Northeast Pacific, tropical storms are known as hurricanes: in the Northwest they are called typhoons: in the South Pacific, they are known as cyclones.
  • Oceania is a geographic region that includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, spanning eastern and western hemisphere.
  • The Ring of Fire or Rim of Fire or Circum Pacific Belt is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquake and volcanic eruption occur. It is a horseshoe shape.
  • Southern Hemisphere is half of the earth that is south of the equator. It contains all or five parts of the continents i.e. Antarctica, Australasia, 90% of the South America, 1/3 of the Africa and several islands of the continental mainland of Asia. Its surface is 80.9% water and it contains 32.7% of the Earth’s land. The south-pole is in the center of the southern hemispherical region which is situated on the continent of “Antarctica”.
